The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Ekiti State has exposed members of the 2026 Batch ‘B’ Stream II to plastic waste recycling as part of efforts to promote environmental sustainability, entrepreneurship and self-reliance.
The training was held at the NYSC Ekiti State Orientation Camp and facilitated by Builder (Dr.) Mrs. Omosebi Taiwo Oluwakemi, an expert in plastic recycling.
The practical session, titled “Turning Plastic Bottles into Interlocking Tiles for Sustainable Construction Materials,” demonstrated how discarded plastic bottles could be converted into useful and durable construction materials.
Omosebi explained that recycling plastic waste could help reduce environmental pollution while creating economic opportunities for young people.
She noted that the recycled plastic materials are water-resistant and do not absorb water, making them suitable for construction in waterlogged and flood-prone areas.
According to her, sand is incorporated into the recycled materials to strengthen them, while measured additives are used to improve their durability and overall quality.
The resource person urged the Corps Members “not to throw away waste plastics again,” stressing that discarded plastics could be transformed into useful products and generate income.
She also encouraged interested Corps Members to learn the recycling process and partner with her, noting that acquiring the skill could promote self-reliance and create employment opportunities after their service year.
