The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested a 19-year-old housewife, identified as Aisha Musa, over the alleged poisoning of her husband in Gwamma Village, Bauchi Local Government Area of the state.
According to police authorities, the incident occurred on August 12 when the suspect allegedly mixed a poisonous substance into a meal prepared for her husband, leaving him in critical condition.
The Command’s spokesperson, SP Nafiu Habib, said officers attached to the C Division in Tafawa Balewa Estate responded after receiving a distress call from a resident who reported the incident. Police officers were immediately deployed to the area, where the victim was found in severe distress.
The husband was rushed to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi, for emergency medical attention. Authorities later confirmed that he survived the incident and is currently receiving treatment in stable condition.
Police said the suspect was arrested shortly after the incident. During preliminary investigations, she allegedly made statements concerning the poisoning after being questioned by investigators. However, authorities stressed that investigations are still ongoing and that the allegations remain subject to judicial determination.
Investigators also recovered an empty bottle believed to have contained the suspected poisonous substance as well as leftover portions of the food allegedly served to the victim. The items have been retained as exhibits and will undergo further examination.
The Commissioner of Police in Bauchi State, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has directed that the matter be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a detailed investigation.
Police authorities said the suspect would be charged in court if sufficient evidence is established at the conclusion of investigations.
The incident has generated widespread reactions among residents, particularly because reports indicate that the couple had been married for only a few weeks before the alleged poisoning occurred.
The Bauchi State Police Command urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities to security agencies, reaffirming its commitment to protecting lives and property across the state.
