Nigerian Dispatch Rider Narrowly Escapes Police Arrest After Riding Against Traffic
A Nigerian dispatch rider has sparked reactions online after sharing a video showing the moment he narrowly escaped arrest after riding against traffic on a one-way road.
In the video, the rider appears to film himself as he travels in the wrong direction, with his speedometer and GPS phone mount visible in front of him. Cars, tricycles and pedestrians can be seen along the road as he continues riding against the flow of traffic.
The tense moment comes when a police van approaches from the opposite direction. As the van slows down near the rider, a police officer jumps out and appears to move toward him in an attempt to stop and apprehend him.
The dispatch rider, who had already slowed down as though he was preparing to surrender, suddenly accelerates instead. He manages to maneuver his way through the one-way road, avoiding the officer before eventually turning into a street and escaping from the main road.
Rather than appearing remorseful about the traffic violation, the rider seems amused and pleased that he managed to dodge the arrest. He later acknowledged the incident himself, adding the overlay: “Omo police nearly catch me for one way. Avoid one way pls.”
The footage has generated a mixture of amusement and criticism online. While some viewers focused on the rider's narrow escape, others pointed out the obvious danger of riding against traffic and urged road users to obey traffic regulations.
The incident also raises a bigger question about road safety and compliance with traffic regulations. If getting away with a traffic violation becomes something to celebrate, it could encourage the same behaviour to be repeated, potentially putting the rider and other road users at serious risk.
